چکیده

Introduction Left atrial volume (LaV) is an important predictor of outcome for many cardiovascular conditions. The most commonly used method to estimate LaV is the area-length (AL) biplane formula based upon LA measures from 2 and 4 chamber (CH) views. Given the asymetrical shape of the LA, we hypothesized that a formula incorporating measures from all 3 conventional long-axis views is a more accurate method for estimating LaV.

Left atrial volume assessed by transthoracic three dimensional echocardiography and magnetic resonance imaging: dynamic changes during the heart cycle in children.

OBJECTIVE To assess the dynamic changes in left atrial volume by transthoracic three dimensional echocardiography and compare the results with those obtained by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). DESIGN AND PATIENTS 30 healthy children (15 boys and 15 girls, aged 8 to 13 years) underwent examination by three dimensional echocardiography and MRI. METHODS Three dimensional echocardiography of ...

Functional left atrial CMR parameters are early predictors of left atrial alterations in hypertension and strongly associated with lv remodeling

Background Left atrial (LA) structural and functional changes are determinant steps on the pathway toward heart failure with preserved ejection fraction in hypertensive (HT) patients. Most LA studies are based on LA volumes evaluation in CMR and echocardiography or on echocardiographic speckle tracking estimation. Since LA functional evaluation by CMR is now emerging we aimed at 1) evaluating L...

Left atrial structure and functional quantitation using cardiac magnetic resonance: comparison of manual delineation vs. multimodality tissue tracking based semi-automated methods

Background Left atrium (LA) volume and function are important markers of cardiovascular disease. LA volume can be assessed by several different methods. In clinical practice, the Simpson’s method is well accepted as a reference standard, although there is no standardization for LA volume calculations. We aimed to compare the estimations of LA volume by the Simpson’s method and the modified bipl...

A Semi-Automated Algorithm for Segmentation of the Left Atrial Appendage Landing Zone: Application in Left Atrial Appendage Occlusion Procedures

Background: Mechanical occlusion of the Left atrial appendage (LAA) using a purpose-built device has emerged as an effective prophylactic treatment in patients with atrial fibrillation at risk of stroke and a contraindication for anticoagulation. A crucial step in procedural planning is the choice of the device size. This is currently based on the manual analysis of the “Device Landing Zone” fr...

Respiratory influence on left atrial volume calculation with 3D-echocardiography

BACKGROUND Left atrial volume (LAV) estimation with 3D echocardiography has been shown to be more accurate than 2D volume calculation. However, little is known about the possible effect of respiratory movements on the accuracy of the measurement. METHODS 100 consecutive patients admitted with chest pain were examined with 3D echocardiography and LAV was quantified during inspiratory breath ho...
